Growing up is hard to do! And today’s young people face more pressure than ever. Besides dealing with common stressors such as friendship/family issues, academic and school related stress, identity issues and intense emotions, there is the ever looming need to figure out one’s future and master the process of “adulting.” It can get overwhelming at times! Common concerns include: anxiety, depression, mood instability, grief and loss, obsessive/compulsive thoughts and behaviors, and major life changes or transitions. Some individuals have a history of trauma and abuse or have resorted to self-harm. Whatever the case, it’s more important than ever to reach out and get some extra support.
Therapy will look different, depending upon the individual. I strive to create a trusting and safe space where one can explore the deeper issues. I trust the client to be “in charge” and to set the agenda. To this end, having a therapist who is a “good fit” is key to treatment success. I want us to feel connected.
During therapy, we will often focus on underlying thoughts and negative beliefs that may interfere with one’s well-being. Specific techniques such as mindfulness or exposure therapy may be utilized. For younger clients, I often incorporate fun and play into our time together. Family members may also be asked to participate as needed. I care deeply about the individuals I work with and am honored to be a part of one’s journey.
